How to read the AWN 10 minute
weather reports

The Australian Weather News 10-minute reports are provided by Bureau of Meteorology automatic weather stations. There is a page of the latest reports for each state, and you can click on any station name to go to a one-week archive for that location.

There are two sets of data in each report:

  • Actual data: To the left of the green date/time column are the measurements for that time: wind, temperature, humidity, pressure at the time, and rainfall over the past 10 minutes.
  • Running tallies of the day's extremes: To the right of the green date/time column are the highest and lowest measurements recorded since midnight.

Colour coding is used to highlight significant wind, rainfall and temperature changes.

Column heading

Description

Wind, Gust

Wind direction at observation time is given in degrees from north. 0°=N, 90°=E, 180°=S, 270°=W. The wind is reported to the nearest degree from well exposed instruments making it possible to detect even slight changes of direction.
Wind speed (average for the past 10 minutes) and the highest gust speed over the past 10 minutes are in km/h.
The wind cells are colour coded to highlight standard wind strengths according to the Beaufort Scale:

41 to 62km/h, or strong wind speeds

63 to 89km/h, or gale force

90km/h or above, or storm force

Temp

The temperature at observation time in °C.

10 min temp var

The highest and lowest temperature recorded over the past 10 minutes. Significant changes in temperature (up or down) are highlighted as follows:

variation of 2.0 to 3.9° in the 10 minutes

variation of 4.0 to 5.9° in the 10 minutes

variation of 6.0° or more in the 10 minutes

Dew Point, Relative Humidity, MSL Pressure

Dew Point is given in °C.
Relative Humidity is given in %.
Pressure reduced to mean sea level is given in hectoPascals.

Rainfall 10 min

Rainfall in the past 10 minutes to the nearest 0.2mm. Significant falls are colour coded as follows:

0.5 to 0.9mm

1.0mm to 1.9mm

2.0mm or more

Accum rain

Accumulated rainfall since midnight local time. Significant falls are colour coded as follows:

12.5 to 24.9mm

25.0 to 49.9mm

50.0mm or more

Max 10 min rain

The heaviest 10-minute measurement since midnight and time of occurrence. It uses the same colour coding as the Rainfall 10 min column

Max wind avg

The highest measured 10-minute average wind speed since midnight and time of occurrence. The wind direction is as measured at the time of observation, not the 10-minute average. It uses the same colour coding as the wind and gust columns.

Max wind gust

The highest measured wind gust since midnight and the 10-minute time in which it occurred. The wind direction is as measured at the time of observation, not necessarily at the time of the gust. It uses the same colour coding as the wind and gust columns.

Max temp, Min temp

The highest and lowest temperatures recorded since midnight, and the 10-minute time in which they occurred.

Max RH, Min RH

The highest and lowest relative humidities recorded since midnight, and the 10-minute time in which they occurred.
