A violent storm around 8pm brought high winds, torrential rain and hail to the WA Goldfields city of Kalgoorlie. Houses and businesses were damaged, with Southlands Shopping Centre partially unroofed. There was flooding in the city as more than 50mm of rain fell in just 6 minutes according to an ABC report. The met office at the airport registered 9.8mm in 8 minutes, and wind gusts to 78km/h. Winds uprooted trees and brought down powerlines. State Emergency Services personnel had to work through the night to make temporary repairs, and a major cleanup effort was scheduled for Tuesday.

Storms with heavy rain and hail were also reported around Gnowangerup, about 120km north of Albany WA. 45mm fell in 75 minutes causing local flooding, and hail to 3cm diameter was reported about 20km south of the town.

Storms in the region failed to help emergency crews fighting a fire east of Hyden WA. The blaze has burnt through over 4,000 hectares of bushland and threatened pastoral properties and the Forrestonia nickel mine this evening. Lightning strikes during the afternoon and evening set off fires near Esperence, Ravensthorpe and Albany.

On the SA/Vic border, another large scrub fire was contained late today after burning through around 3,000ha about 50km northeast of Bordertown.

A storm at Parkers Corner, about 5km west of Walhalla in Victoria's West Gippsland district, produced hail to 3cm and heavy rain causing crop and property damage.
