A downpour only partly accompanied by thunder gave the Queensland Channel Country town of Winton 101mm between 3 and 9pm today. The torrent was the heaviest of widespread falls recorded in an active monsoonal trough extending from the WA Kimberley through the southern half of the NT and into western and southern Qld. Lands End Station, 40km NW of Julia Creek Qld recorded 155.2mm for the 24 hours to 9am, while Brightlands Station, 50km SW of Cloncurry recorded 115mm. Some of the more impressive short duration falls are given at left. Meanwhile, Tibooburra in NW NSW received a further 50mm in the 24 hours to 9am, giving the settlement 100mm in the past 48 hrs.

Abnormally cold daytime temperatures continued south of the monsoonal trough, with maximum figures 12 or more below average in southern NT and along the NSW/Qld border.
