TC Steve, downgraded to a tropical depression soon after it made landfall at Cairns on Sunday, was renamed a cyclone by the Darwin Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre as it moved out over the warm waters of the Gulf of Carpentaria near Mornington Island late this morning.

Heavy rain fell again this morning in the Kimberley region of WA. Kuri Bay, 350km NE of Broome, recorded 149mm between 3pm yesterday and 6 this morning, while Derby recorded 85mm in 21 hours and Southeast Waterbank near Broome 54mm in 6 hours. Broome Airport has exceeded its average yearly rainfall in the first two months of the year, with 570.2mm compared to the annual average of 552.8mm.

A line of storms which developed dramatically along the length of the WA wheat belt this afternoon gave some heavy falls in the Central, Great Southern and Goldfields districts. Burracoppin, 30km east of Merredin, recorded 85mm in about 45 minutes, flooding the town with a metre of water. Prisoners from a mobile work camp assisted the 40 residents to clear household debris and blocked drains.
