Heavy rain begins from ex-TC Vaughan on Qld north coast
Isolated heavy rain inland
The arrival of a strong SE surge on the Queensland north tropical coast triggered the first heavy rain from former Tropical Cyclone Vaughan this evening. The SE surge, generated by the low/trough system that crossed southeastern states over the past 3 days, rippled up the Queensland coast today, producing galeforce winds over SE Qld ocean waters and the nearby coast, and some isolated heavy rain in SE Qld. Cairns Airport recorded 48.8mm in the hour to 10.30pm as the surge began to interact with the deep moisture field left by the cyclone.

The inland Queensland town of Longreach recorded an isolated 26mm in a thunderstorm late this afternoon, while Uluru (Ayers Rock) in central Australia reported an unusual 36mm for the 24 hours to 9am, presumably from a storm.
