Widespread moderate to heavy rain in NSW, Vic
Warm nights continue in the east
Rainfall for the 24 hours to 9am today (above) and Friday (below). Minimum temperature departure from normal (bottom)

The trough lying down through western NSW continued to produce widespread rain today, with the main focus moving into Victoria. Central and eastern areas of the state received good soaking falls of 25 to 60mm, which were particularly welcome in Gippsland, where drought for the past 4 years has been the most severe on record in some areas.

The trough and rain band moved east across Victoria during the day, giving 6 to 9 hours of steady rain as they passed. The rain event spanned two rainfall "days", which end at 9am, and the eastward movement can be seen in the two rain maps at left. Some of the heavier known short-duration totals are given below -- Redesdale, 35km SE of Bendigo, for example recorded 45mm in 6 hours to 3am, while Albury Airport gauged 40mm in 6 hours to 6am. Some parts of East Gippsland and northeast Victoria received 70mm or more in the 2 day period to 9am Friday, though most rain fell today. Hunters Hill, about 40km west of Corryong, gauged 115mm, Mitta Mitta 85, Lakes Entrance 72, Bairnsdale 68mm, and Corryong 69.

The cloud cover and moist northeasterlies continued to produce very high overnight temperatures for May, with most of central NSW, central southern Qld and northeastern Victoria recording minimum temperatures 8 to 12 above the norm.
