Continent warms up after cold outbreak
The cold weather that has gripped much of the eastern and later northern parts of the continent eased today. While early morning minimum temperatures were below normal over most of the country again, departures were generally only 4 to 8 below average, and much of the south returned to normal morning temperatures. Maximum temperatures were also below normal over most of the country apart from southern WA and small areas of Victoria, NSW and Tasmania, but departures from normal were typically 2 to 6 below. Light overnight snow was again reported from Guyra in the NSW Northern Tablelands, and strong southerly winds lashed Tasmania and Bass Strait briefly as a small low developed late morning on the western flank of the major low in the Tasman and moved north up the island's east coast. As a last Hurrah for this long-lived cold outbreak, instability associated with the small low gave overnight thunderstorms along Victoria's East Gippsland coast, with Orbost recording 25mm between 6 this evening and 3am Friday.
