Fog widespread in southern NSW and northern Victoria
The back end of a large high pressure system frequently produces widespread fog in southeastern Australia during autumn and winter. Humidity levels increase as northerlies swing warmer, moister air around the western side of the high, but night time conditions remain stable, skies stay clear, and temperatures drop rapidly to the dew point. However, the calm night time conditions directly under the high are replaced by light winds, sufficient to mix the moisture into fog rather than depositing it as dew or frost. The past few mornings have seen widespread but scattered fogs over NSW and northern Victoria, but this morning a large area of fog covered the NSW Riverina and most of the Murray Valley in Victoria. Though this dissipated by late morning in most places as the sun broke through and warmed the ground, it was thick enough in the Tocumwal area to last through the day.
