Widespread rain and a possible tornado in central Qld
A surface trough through inland Queensland overnight combined with cold upper air moving across southern and central areas to produce unusually strong winter convection and consequent thunderstorms and showers. Falls of 30 to 75mm were widespread in the Central Highlands, Central Coast, Warrego and Maranoa. What was reported as a tornado by the media demolished a circus tent, caused minor house damage and widespread tree damage in the central Queensland town of Emerald. Information is sketchy, and it is not known whether the event occurred late yesterday or this morning.
