Warm, strong winds bring bushfires to SE Qld
Thunderstorms and hail in eastern NSW
Strengthening dry northwesterly winds fanned numerous small bushfires around and north of Brisbane today. The worst were at The Gap, west of the city, Kuraby to the south, and Mt Petrie to the city's north. North of Brisbane, fires were reported at Kilcoy, Toogoolawah, Clontarf, Caboolture, Strathpine and Samsonvale. The wind grew strong enough during the afternoon to force the closure of Brisbane's Gateway Bridge, high above the Brisbane River.

Heavy thunderstorms swept across Sydney and the Central, Hunter and Mid North Coasts today. They accompanied a weak low pressure system and attendant trough that crossed the coast near Sydney around dawn. Hail to 4cm diameter was reported with a storm at Camden Haven, near Port Macquarie, while hail to 2cm was reported from Laurieton early in the afternoon. During late morning, fast moving storms swept through Sydney's northern suburbs dropping copious small hail, with 6mm of rain falling in 5 minutes at Glenorie in Sydney's northwest.
