| Snow to
low levels in Tasmania Still cold in the Centre |
| Snow fell as low as 300m near
Geeveston in southeastern Tasmania this morning, and snow and hail
were widespread across the Central Plateaux as a wave of colder air
embedded in a strong southwesterly stream crossed the island. Aided by a
180km/h southwesterly jet stream, the upper trough dropped temperatures
to -5 at 850hPa (about 1,400m), with thickness levels around the mid-520s,
which would be cold for mid-winter.
Cold nights continue in central Australia. Alice Springs recorded its second successive overnight minimum of 4°, 10.7 below normal, while similar departures from normal were recorded farther east at Jervois, and across the Queensland border at Urandangie. |
