Snow to low levels in Tasmania
Still cold in the Centre
Snow fell as low as 300m near Geeveston in southeastern Tasmania this morning, and snow and hail were widespread across the Central Plateaux as a wave of colder air embedded in a strong southwesterly stream crossed the island. Aided by a 180km/h southwesterly jet stream, the upper trough dropped temperatures to -5 at 850hPa (about 1,400m), with thickness levels around the mid-520s, which would be cold for mid-winter.

Cold nights continue in central Australia. Alice Springs recorded its second successive overnight minimum of 4°, 10.7 below normal, while similar departures from normal were recorded farther east at Jervois, and across the Queensland border at Urandangie.
