Patchy
heavy rain in Qld, NSW, Vic breaks June records Warm nights continue in the east |
||
Moist northerlies ahead of
a slow-moving trough system continued to produce warm, sultry weather across
the eastern states today, with thunderstorms and showers giving general
falls of 20 to over 60mm in a band from SE NSW to SW Queensland.
Both the southwestern Queensland towns of Windorah and Thargomindah
broke century-old June rainfall records after a night of continuous storms
left around 60mm in each gauge. At Windorah, 41mm fell between 3am and 9am.
Other heavy 24-hour totals in the area included 66 at Hungerford Qld and
53 at Enngonia NSW. As the storms moved east, St George in the Maranoa
recorded 50mm between 9am and 9pm.
The heaviest rain fell in the NSW and Victorian Alps. Mt Buffalo Chalet Vic recorded 89.4 in the 24 hours to 9am, while Australia's highest automatic weather station, on the Crackenback Range at Thredbo NSW, received 70mm, its heaviest one-day June fall since it began operating 16 years ago. Heavy showers behind the trough gave some respectable totals in South Australia, too. Kingscote on Kangaroo Island recorded 33.4mm between 9am and noon. Exceptionally warm conditions continued across much of Queensland, NSW and Victoria. While daytime temperatures were from a little to 6 or 8° up on normal, they were restrained by substantial cloud cover over much of the eastern half of the continent ahead of the trough. However, the same cloud cover coupled with warm air of tropical origin kept overnight temperatures between 8 and 12° above normal across central NSW and central southern Queensland. Tambo, on the Queensland Central Highlands, where the normal minimum for June is 4.7, recorded a minimum of 18, while Bombala on the NSW Southern Tablelands recorded 11.5 compared to a normal of -0.1. |
