About Australian Weather News
Unusually mild for a southwesterly in Tasmania
Taswegians experienced an unusually mild day for southwesterly winds today. A tongue of dry, warmer air circulating around a strong (1036hPa) high pressure system west of Adelaide arrived over the state overnight, lifting daytime temperatures to 4 to 6° above normal, even though the wind remained a fresh to strong souwester. The effects were most strongly felt in the north and northeast, where air descending after its passage over the Tasmanian Highlands dried and warmed with a föhn effect. Eddystone Point, the island's northeastern extremity, recorded its warmest July day in 42 years of computerised records, when the mercury soared to 19.0°.
