Widespread moderate rain across eastern states

Rainfall for the week ended 9am Thursday 25 October. BoM
Widespread falls of 10 to nearly 100mm covered much of the eastern half of the continent between Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning as a broad trough moved east and its attendant cloudband propagated northwards into Queensland. The map at right shows the extent of the rain, most of which fell during the 3 days ended 9am Thursday. Moderate rain began falling in northern Victoria and the NSW Riverina district late yesterday afternoon, with many locations recording between 20 and 40mm between 3pm yesterday and 3am today. One farmer near Urana NSW said the 36mm he recorded was his heaviest single fall in two years. The heaviest totals were recorded in the Victorian and NSW Alps, where Mt Buffalo Chalet reported 95.2mm and Mt Hotham summit 77mm, of which 22mm fell in the 6 hours to 9pm yesterday and 49mm in the further 6 hours to 3am. Northern Tasmania also had 6 hours or so of moderate to heavy rain late last night and early this morning, with Wynyard Airport registering 34mm in the 6 hours to midnight.

During today, rain spread northeast into NSW, while thunderstorms and rain areas also developed through western and central Queensland in the broad trough system. In NSW, Thredbo Crackenback station reported 53mm between 9pm and 6am today, Mudgee Airport 29mm between 6am and midday, and Bathurst Airport 24mm between 9am and 3pm. In Queensland, storms and rain areas developed from late morning, and details of some of the heavier short-duration falls are in the box below. The heaviest 24 hour totals to 9am Thursday were Boulia Airport 55.9, Burketown Airport 46 and Quilpie Telemeter 39mm. Properties in dry areas around Winton and Longreach received up to 45mm.
