Trough brings flooding to NE Tasmania, storms to eastern states
Heavy rain fell across northern and eastern Tasmania overnight and this morning from an active cloudband ahead of a trough which in turn arced ahead of a deepening, slow-moving low to the west of the state. The moist northeasterlies ahead of the trough dumped around 100mm on parts of the Northeast Highlands and east coast ranges, with Gray, at the top of the Elephant Pass southeast of St Mary's, scoring top fall of 113.8mm. A heavy spell of rain in the central northern inland gave Sheffield 68mm between 9 last night and 6 this morning. Mt Wellington recorded 69mm at the summit automatic weather station, its highest November one-day tally in 14 years of record. All northern and northeastern streams rose rapidly, with the South Esk basin reporting moderate flood levels and the Meander basin minor flood levels during the day. Details of flood peaks are in the other extremes box below.

As the same trough arced east over Victoria and NSW and northeast into southern Queensland, widespread storms developed with reports of several severe storms, and isolated hail and strong winds. Thunderstorms around 4am knocked out power to much of Dubbo for several hours with lightning trackers recording over 2000 lightning strikes in an hour across the Central West. A storm that developed west of Moree during the early afternoon swept across the town giving wind gusts to 102km/h at the airport at 4.10pm, then continued moving ENE to cause extensive damage in Warialda. The hospital roof was blown off causing patients to be evacuated, while a number of houses in the town were damaged by falling trees. Tamworth was also hit by a storm late afternoon that brought down trees and powerlines. Elsewhere in the state, 2cm hail was reported at Elderslie in the lower Hunter, and 1.5cm hail between 2.35 and 2.45pm at Armidale Uni.

Earlier in the day, scattered storms developed over Victoria ahead of the trough, one giving wind gusts to around 120km/h at Falls Creek and Mt Hotham. In southern and central Queensland, storms began forming to the east of the slow-moving trough mid afternoon but saved most of their wrath for early Sunday morning.
