Violent storm damages Dungog NSW
Cold and stormy in eastern WA
Heavy downpour at Kununurra WA
A small but violent storm brought strong winds and heavy hail to the lower Hunter Valley town of Dungog NSW around 7pm today. The isolated storm cell developed about 50km NW of Gosford around 3pm, then travelled slowly north parallel to the coast. The storm maintained a nearly circular rain echo about 20km in diameter on radar until it weakened then vanished rapidly around 8pm. Between 5.30pm when it was west of Newcastle and 7.30, soon after it passed directly over Dungog, the radar echoes indicated a strong but small hail shaft. About 9 Dungog houses were unroofed in the storm, while a shed roof was blown onto a neighbouring house. Trees and power lines were brought down, and power was lost to about a thousand residences for up to 4 hours. SES and power employees spent much of the night cleaning up.

Heavy cloud cover and rain areas kept maximum temperatures 12 or more below average over the southeastern two-thirds of WA today. Leonora's top of 17.9 was a whopping 17.5 below the December average. There were some heavy falls of rain in desert areas, with Warburton recording 35mm in 3 hours to midnight this morning and Laverton 21mm in 3 hours to 9am.

A line of storm cells that developed on the monsoon trough line south of Wyndham this afternoon brought brief torrential rain. Kununurra Airport recorded 47.8mm in 30 minutes to 4pm.
