In Tasmania, heavy rain fell overnight on the southern slopes of Mount Wellington and around Sorell in a strong southerly airstream. 47mm was reported at Copping and Nugent, between Sorell and Port Arthur, while Grove, south of Hobart, had 39mm. The Huon River rose to minor flood level, peaking late afternoon (peak heights are given below). Twenty bushfires were intensified by strong, dry and gusty westerly winds in NE and SE NSW this afternoon. The largest was SW of Grafton, where 2,000 hectares were alight, just one of 12 fires burning between Grafton and Coffs Harbour. Another fire was burning near Tabulam, inland from Casino, while fires were also active on the South Coast in the Shoalhaven, Eurobodalla and Bega Valley areas. |
