Storms on NSW/Qld border |
|
NEWSBITS: A line of thunderstorms that developed from Dorrigo NSW to Dalby Qld around 1pm moved east over the next four hours giving some moderate falls of rain. Hail was reported from Maryborough and Point Lookout on Stradbroke Island, and Yamba and Dorrigo on the NSW North Coast. At Cooroy and Pomona, 120km north of Brisbane, 20c-sized hail caused some roof and tree damage. Maximum temperatures today were 8 to 11 above average in Central Australia and southward to the SA west coast, and on the NSW slopes and plains. A rare sea fog rolled into Sydney's Pittwater suburbs this morning. Mona Vale resident Judy Mayo said it was very dense and finally blew away about 9am. "We have lived in this house since 1976," she said, "and have never seen anything like it in all of those years. A neighbour down the street who has lived here for over 40 years was also surprised. We went up to Palm Beach and found that the National Parks Heliocopter had landed on the grass area because of lack of visibility." While radiation fog is not uncommon in the Cumberland Basin in which most of Sydney is situated, it is a rarity along the northern beaches which are backed by the tall ridges on the northern side of the basin. In Alice Springs, NT, a strong dust
devil tore roofing off a furniture store, depositing it on a car a
block away. |
