NEWSBITS: Two storms whiz through Melbourne |
|
The hot airmass that had become entrenched through central and southern Queensland and NE NSW over the past 7 days was finally shifted seawards late today by cooler, moister air spilling in from the south behind a trough. Scattered clusters of thunderstorms developed along the airmass boundary, extending from the Queensland/NT border to the NSW Hunter coast. In southwestern Queensland, the trough was slow moving, and a succession of storms, moving southeast down the trough, gave Quilpie nearly continuous thunder or thunderstorms from 6am to midnight. Some strong wind gusts were recorded in storms in NSW, including 106km/h at Narrabri, 93 at Coonabarabran, and 89 at Glen Innes. Hail to 5cm diameter was reported at Guyra and 2cm at Wooli on the coast ESE of Grafton, and at Umina on the NSW Central Coast.. NEWSBITS: Two isolated and very fast-moving thunderstorms swept across Melbourne, about 30 minutes apart, between 7 and 8pm. Hail to 1.5cm diameter was reported from Dandenong, while in North Fitzroy large hail was mixed in with cascades of pea-sized hail, sufficient to turn the streets white. In each case, the storms were past in 5 minutes. |
