A complex frontal trough system moved around the SE corner of the continent today and up the NSW coast, bringing strong winds and some useful rain. A small low developed in the trough as it moved through Bass Strait early in the morning, giving the Victorian Otway coast falls of 38mm to 9 this morning with Weeaproinah reporting hail showers and a wintry 3.2° at 9am. Sleet was reported at Leopold, 10km ESE of Geelong and 50m above sea level, at around 8am, and it is believed that snow or sleet fell briefly about 300m on the Otways and to the north and west of Werribee, as well as at Monbulk in the Dandenongs. Parts of East Gippsland recorded 30 to 38mm in the 24 hours to 9am Sunday, most falling from storms this afternoon. Orbost received 25mm in the 3 hours to 6pm from a thunderstorm that also produced hail. Strong winds accompanied the change as it moved up the NSW coast. Taree was worst affected when wind gusts to 95km/h brought down trees on houses and blocked roads. SES personnel from Port Macquarie had to be brought in to help clean up during the weekend. |
