Northerly winds ahead of a trough spread hot tropical air over all Western Australia today. Maximum temperatures were 39° or above across the state, with the exception of the far SE and parts of the west coastal fringe. The southwestern towns of Manjimup and Pemberton both recorded record tops of 40°, their highest December maxima in 43 years of computerised record, while Jarrahwood, 50km south of Bunbury, also captured a record with 39°. An unlikely record also appears to have been set at Kowanyama, which is on the western side of Cape York Peninsula at the same latitude as Cooktown, Qld. The station reported a maximum of 41° today, a 34 year December high. Kowanyama is 35km inland from the Gulf of Carpentaria, and surrounding stations seem to confirm that the day was sufficiently hot to produce the record. After coming close to a December record cold morning yesterday, Alice Springs Airport recorded a minimum of 9.3 this morning, breaking the old record by 0.4 in a 61 year computer history. |
