Heavy thunderstorms augmented monsoonal rain across the north of WA, the NT
and QLD today. In WA, Broome experienced thunderstorms throughout the afternoon
with 44mm deposited in the raingauge between 4 and 6pm. Along the NT Arnhem
north coast, storm force winds accompanied some of the storms. Ngayawili, 130km
west of Gove, recorded a wind gust of 104km/h just before 8pm with 46mm falling
between 6 and 9pm. Earlier in the day, Ngayawili recorded 9.8mm in 8 minutes
from 1.35am in another storm. 70km farther west, Milingimbi reported nearly
continuous heavy rain all day with 104mm recorded between 9am and 3pm and a
total of 203mm for the 24 hours to 9 this evening. 240km farther to the WNW
again, McCluer Island recorded 116mm between 9pm last night and 9 this morning
with a wind
gust of
89km/h
just before
dawn. See wettest and downpours for
more detail of heavy falls across the tropics.
Hot in SE WA and SW SA
The WA surface trough that has been focussing hot northeasterly winds on
the state's southwest for the past few days moved east today, taking the
heat with it. As the map at right shows, a sparsely inhabited area around
the WA/SA border recorded the highest temperatures relative to normal today,
with maximum temperatures of around 40C ranging from 10 to 16 above average.
Bushfires contained in southern WA
Firefighters welcomed the cooler weather in SW WA today after containing
35 fires around Harvey, Collie and Donnybrook over the past few days. The
fires were all or mostly started by lightning strikes and, though small,
all occurred at the same time, severely testing the region's resources.
Fire and Emergency Services Authority's south-west manager Chris Widmer
told ABC Radio up to 85 per cent of firefighting resources had been required
to control the fires.
In SE WA, the Department of Conservation and Land Management brought in
water bombing aircraft and additional manpower from Albany, Kalgoorlie,
Narrogin and Katanning to help fight four major fires in national parks
around Esperance. The largest, in the Cape
Arid
National
Park 125km east of Esperance, was
expected
to burn through 10,000ha. Huge flames up to 25m high were threatening the
habitat of the critically endangered western ground parrot on the fire's
northern
front while three camping areas on the coast had to be evacuated. Two other
bushfires were affecting about 2000ha of the Cape Le Grand National Park,
25km east of Esperence while another was burning in the Kau Rock Nature
Reserve, 65km north-east of the town.
