QLD, NT: Wet in the southern Gulf

The monsoon trough continues to bring heavy late wet-season falls. the southern coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria near the NT/QLD border recorded heavy totals as the monsoon low visible on the surface charts below continued to direct moist northerlies into the area. Westmoreland Station, 140km WNW of Burketown, notched up 214.0mm in the 24 hours to 9 this morning, and followed that up with a further 208.0 to 9am Saturday. Both daily totals were the highest for March at the station since it recorded 468.9mm to 9am on 22 March 1973. Westmoreland's average March rainfall is 167.6mm, compared to its 3-day total to 9am Saturday of 500.0mm. Other high totals to 9am Saturday in the southern Gulf include 500.0mm at Centre Island (6 days), 492.0mm at Bing Bong Port (4 days), and 262.2 at Mornington Island (3 days). Farther south, the Thomson River peaked at 3.0m yesterday at Longreach with minor flooding, and minor flooding continued in Cooper Creek at Windorah. In the NT, regular wet-season flooding continues across most of the Top End with all but major highways closed.

AUS: Cold across the south

The low SE of TAS coupled with a strong ridge of high pressure through the Bight have combined to give much of southern AUS the most widespread cool conditions since 10 February. In central and SE NSW, overnight minima dropped to around 3C at Young, Oberon and Nerriga. A fresh southwesterly stream produced gales in Bass Strait until late afternoon and a 104km/h wind gust at Wilsons Promontory. Maatsuyker Island off the TAS south coast found its enshrouded in sea fog around dawn as cold, moist air moved onshore over warm seawater.
