AUS: Low temperatures continue; exceptional cold in N QLD

Burketown PO, 25km inland from the Gulf of Carpentaria, experienced its coldest May temperature in 108 years this morning. The low of 4.9 was 12.1 below average and 0.8 below the previous record set in 1925. 290km to the east, Croydon equalled its 42-year May record of 6.0, set in 1974. These extraordinarily large departures from normal for the northern tropics occurred as most of the country continued to shiver. As the maps below show, minimum temperatures were below average almost everywhere apart from the western half of WA, while only a handful of weather stations recorded above average maximum temperatures. Perhaps the most remarkable feature of today's maximum temperature anomaly map is the even distribution of the variations from average, with a range only from +1 to -8.
