WA: Welcome rain as Perth records driest start to year on record. Light to moderate rain fell across WA SW of a line from Carnarvon to Esperance today as a cold front swept through producing the first worthwhile rain in four weeks. The southern wet season in WA normally starts in May, with Perth Airport averaging 104mm in May and 169 in June. Perth Metro recorded its first rain for June today, though only a measly 4.4mm was in the gauge by 9am Thursday. The airport's May total was 42mm, and two light falls have given a total of 9mm for June so far. It is the driest start to winter and to the year to date in Perth since records began in the 1880s.

SA, SE WA: Cold start to the day. Minimum temperatures were 8 or 9 below the norm across much of SA this morning, and the cold spread west into SE WA where Eyre's -3.6 was 10.6 below.

Equal to record. Previous record set earlier this month. Note that this station is only reporting its minimum temperature to the nearest degree, so its run of equal records of -5.0 (on 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 26, 27 and 29 June) is a little misleading compared to most other stations that report to the nearest tenth of a degree.
