Noteworthy weather today
significant newsworthy major

TAS: Wintry westerlies bring snow and gales. After a relatively benign start to winter, cold and windy weather set in across TAS today. Snow on the Central Plateau was observed down to the 600m level this morning, though only 1cm was reported lying at Lake St Clair and 2cm at Liawenee. Wind gusts topped 100km/h at Maatsuyker Island and Mt Wellington, while it was blowy in Bass Strait, too, with gusts of 102km/h at Hogan Island and 95km/h at Wilsons Promontory, 50km to the west. Many locations in TAS and VIC reported high 24-hour wind averages. Wind data is below.

WA, NT, QLD : Temperature extremes in the north and west. The large high in southern WA shown on the surface charts below is swinging warm, very dry E to NE winds across the northern half of the country. Overnight, the low dew points allowed temperatures to plummet, with much of tropical northern AUS reporting minima 4 to 8 below average. Georgetown, in the Gulf Country at the base of Cape York Peninsula, recorded a low of only 4.7, 7.2 below average. Today's maximum temperatures were 6 to 9 above normal in Central Western WA, with Kalbarri reaching 30.0C, its highest July maximum in 30 years of records. Farther north, Denham on Shark Bay also set a July record with a top of 29.0 and an 18-year history.
