Annual snow days sorted by rainfall district -- TAS islands and Australian Antarctic stations |

| Observers report the occurrence or non-occurrence of snow, along with other weather phenomena, in their field books for each calendar day. The figures below have been averaged from monthly totals available in the Australian Climatic Database produced by the SA regional office of the Bureau of Meteorology. The highest and lowest number of snow days reported in a year are also given, along with the number of years of record, first and last year of record and station elevation above sea level. Blank entries have been assumed to be "no reports of snow" as distinct from "no snow reported", and have been omitted from the count. Caution: My observation is that these field book entries are not 100% reliable and should only be taken as a very rough guide. On occasions, snow may be entered in error -- reports of snow in the tropics are almost certainly errors! Observers may confuse hail or sleet for snow (increasing the count), or may not observe snow falling at night or when they are away from the station (reducing the count). In addition, the data for some stations for some years is incomplete, resulting in a false low snow day reading for the year and reducing the average -- this is why some obviously snowy places such as Charlotte Pass have zero snow days in the "low" column. |
