 Cold
morning for Perth and central southern WA
With SW WA sitting under a 1030hPa high pressure system, this morning
was a cold one across the southwestern third of the state with an area extending
from Perth inland to the Great Southern and Central Wheat Belt recording minima
6 to 9 below average and frost-level temperatures. Wandering, 50km WNW of Narrogin,
was the state's coldest place with a minimum of -1.4 closely followed by Hyden
on -1.2. In southern Perth, Gosnells City and Jandakot Aerodrome both recorded
their lowest May minima in short 12-year histories with lows of 4.1 and 0.9
respectively.
Cold
day in central and southern NT
Cloud cover across central and southern NT and neighbouring areas
again kept daytime temperatures well down on normal today, though only light rain was
reported. Tennant Creek's top of 16.3 was 11.3 below average, while Alice Springs
Airport only reached 14.5 and Arltunga, 90km to the ENE, 14.2.
NT
wet weather moves north
The leading edge of colder air that has interacted with moisture to produce
considerable rain across southern NT moved northwards today, bringing isolated
heavy rain and some thunderstorms across the Territory's northwest. Victoria
River Downs recorded 13mm in half an hour to 7pm followed by 33.4 in the hour
to 11.30pm.
Wintry
weather moves into the southeast
A cold southwesterly stream swept across TAS, VIC and southern NSW
today, bringing wintry winds, hail showers, and widespread but light
snow to VIC and NSW Alpine resorts and lowering to about the 600m level in
TAS overnight into Friday. A small trough that moved across SE NSW during
the morning gave brief sleet and snow around Bombala, Cooma and Nimmitabel.
Gales
as trough passes Lord Howe Island
The trough at the leading edge of the cold airmass sweeping SE Australia
passed slowly across Lord Howe Island during the day, bringing gale force
winds from
soon after midday. A top gust of 89km/h was reported shortly before
9pm. |
