VIC: Strong NW winds bring record heat

Extreme early-season heat swept across VIC today, bringing most centres their highest maximum temperatures on record for the first half of September. Melbourne City recorded a top of 29.9C, 3.1C above the previous first-half-of-September record in over 150 years of observations. Other significant first-half-of-September records were Mildura 34.0 (1.8 over the previous record), Nhill 32.3 (2.3), Ballarat 26.2 (2.5) and Orbost 29.9 (1.7). Many locations also equalled or broke their records for any time in August, including Kerang, Kyabram and Essendon, Laverton and Melbourne Airports, all of which have 40 or more years of record. Hopetoun was the hottest place in VIC with 35C. (See records.)

A trough with some embedded thunderstorms moved across western VIC during the afternoon, producing strong gusty winds with top recordings of 113km/h at Horsham and 102 at Nhill. A train carrying between 70 and 100 passengers hit a pine tree downed by the winds between Colac and Camperdown, throwing the locomotive and two carriages on their sides and injuring 3 passengers. In alpine areas, the wind reached 124km/h at Mt Buller and 115 at Mt Hotham. Virtually no rain was recorded with the cold change that crossed the state overnight into Saturday.

International Events

GREECE: Flash flooding in southeastern Greece has damaged hundreds of homes on the island of Evia, trapping residents and killing at least one person. A state of emergency has been declared in several regions.
