WA's
heatwave continued today with records for
high maximum and minimum temperatures falling at a number of
centres in the Southwest and Central West. Donnybrook,
Bridgetown, Manjimup, Pemberton and Albany,
locations with around 40 years or more of computerised records,
all
set new November highs. Albany Airport's
top of 39.2 easily eclipsed the previous record of 38.1, though
sea breezes
kept most of the town considerably cooler in a remarkable demonstration
of the temperature difference a sea breeze can make. At 3pm
the temperature at the Airport, 11km north of town, was 38.8
while the Town thermometer,
close to the Southern Ocean, read only 24.5.
Last night was Perth's warmest for November by a long shot.
The lowest temperature recorded at the airport was 26.3. The
previous
highest November minimum in records going back to 1944 was
22.0 in 1972. At Gosnells, 20km SE of Perth CBD, the temperature
didn't
fall below 27.5. Other November record-breaking high minima
were 26.8 at Beverley (previous 25.5 in 33 years of record),
24.4 at Brookton (22.5, 35), 23.0 at Dwellingup (21.0, 43),
22.3 at Karnet (22.0, 31), and 24.8 at Morawa (24.5, 38).
In the wheatbelt east of Perth, Narembeen set a new high of 41.6
while Northam, which set
a new November
record
of
42.6
yesterday,
broke
that
again
with
a reading of 42.8 today. On the second day of over 40° heat
in the area, over 40 scrub fires kept firefighters busy while late
afternoon thunderstorms blacked out a thousand residents in the
northeast when lightning blew fuses in pole-top equipment.
