A weak
trough over SA moved only very slowly east to the VIC border today, directing
hot dry northerlies across eastern SA, VIC and TAS. After an exceptionally
hot night across eastern SA, with minima 10 to 12 above normal, the centre
of heat shifted to VIC and TAS. Lake St Clair, on the Central Plateau in
TAS, set a new November maximum temperature record at 27.6°, while Geeveston
in the state's south recorded a top of 33.1, a massive 15.3 above average.
Lightning from dry thunderstorms overnight sparked numerous fires to the southeast
and south of Adelaide, on Kangaroo Island and on the Yorke Peninsula. Four
hundred volunteers battled 7 fires in Carey Gully, SE of Adelaide, and on the
Fleurieu
Peninsula
and Kangaroo
Island. The largest, at Kemmiss Hill, 60km south of the capital, burnt through
about 300ha and threatened homes. Nine fires were reported on Kangaroo Island,
six in remote and inaccessible areas. Powerlines brought down by wind were
responsible for several fires on the Yorke Peninsula which burnt through a
few hectares of wheat and killed several sheep. A host of small fires were
also started in the Wimmera in VIC by lightning, farm machinery and other causes
yesterday and today. Rain from further storms this evening helped extinguish
many of the blazes.
