Continued rain brings late season flooding to N QLD

Heavy rain continued to fall in the Tully River catchment today, pushing the river over minor flood level at Euramo, 10km south of Tully. In the 24 hours to 9am, the heaviest falls were Murray Flats alert 208mm, Jarra Creek alert 201, Jarra Creek telemetered gauge (TM) 180, Topaz 170, Euramo alert 169, Euramo TM 155 and Millaa Millaa alert 152. Isolated heavy falls spread west of the Divide in the form of thunderstorms. Among the higher falls were Richmond PO 62.8, Strathmore 54 and Abingdon Downs 43 (both about 200km E of Normanton) and Muttaburra, 100km NNE of Longreach, 32mm.

Cold night in SE AUS

Very cold overnight minima for April were reported over a wide area this morning. Coldest places were on the NSW Northern Tablelands where Woolbrook recorded -5.5, Armidale Uni -5.0 and Glen Innes Airport -4.0. In far northwestern NSW, Wilcannia recorded a low of 1.8, nearly 10° below average and a new April low for the station in 46 years of computerised record. Point Hicks Lighthouse in East Gippsland VIC also set a record, its reading of 5.2 the lowest for April in 34 years of record. The cool conditions extended well to the north with Kulgera, just north of the SA/NT border, recording a minimum of 5.0, 8.4 below normal.
