Christmas Day was stormy across much of the continent with an active monsoon
trough bringing widespread thunderstorms and heavy showers to tropical WA,
NT and QLD, a weak cold front sweeping storms through NE NSW and SE QLD during
the afternoon and
evening,
and
a troughline
giving
Perth
and SW WA late afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Downpours across the tropics
are not unusual for the wet season,
though 58.8mm in the hour to 11.30pm at Delamere Weapons Range, 165km WNW
of Daly Waters, was significant. There were intense downpours in SE QLD with
Brisbane Airport recording 52.4mm in just
36
minutes
to
10.30pm and Gladstone Radar notching up 32.6mm
in 30 minutes to 7.30pm. Other heavy short duration falls are listed
below and in the early morning reports for 26 December. Earlier, Tambo,
170km north of Charleville, set a new December one-day rainfall record in 118
years
of
observations
with
a
9am
reading
of
88.0mm.
Storms across SW WA brought damaging wind gusts and fires started by lightning.
The highest wind gust recorded was 93km/h at Dalwallinu, 200km NNE of Perth,
but wind gusts of around 80km/h in suburban Perth brought down trees and powerlines
and caused 3-hour blackouts in Ashfield, Bayswater, Bedford, Maylands, Armadale,
Gosnells, Kelmscott, Queens Park and Welshpool. Lightning with the many dry
thunderstorms started bushfires as far afield as Moora, Ravensthorpe and Kojonup.
Hot
in SW WA, cool in northern QLD
In a reversal of normal temperature patterns, the WA coastal fringe between
Bunbury and Geraldton, including Perth, recorded maximum temperatures around
40C or
between 8 and 13 above average today while areas of QLD and the NT near the
Gulf enjoyed mild maxima in the high 20s, 8 or 9 below average. Geraldton's
42.4 was 13.0 above the norm and Perth Airport's 39.2 was 10.4 up on average.
Croydon, just 170km from the Gulf of Carpentaria, recorded a top of only 28.2
(9.1 below) thanks to heavy monsoonal cloud cover.
