Australia Day mostly fine across the nation as cyclone brews in WA

Most Australians across the country enjoyed a fine day today with heavy thunderstorms in NE NSW and areas of heavy rain in the tropics the only exceptions up to late afternoon.

In NE NSW and southern QLD, a line of active storms moved NE during the late morning and afternoon brought a few heavy falls with Murrurundi Gap in the Upper Hunter recording 31.2mm between 10.00 and 14.00EDT of which 17.4mm fell in the first 40 minutes. Gunnedah had a real downpour with 15.4mm in just 9 minutes to 14.32, easing off to give a storm total of 32mm. Falls like this must have been common up the ranges from around Scone to Dorrigo. Meldrum, just west of Dorrigo, top-scored to 17.00EDT with 66mm.

In the tropics, only the WA Kimberley, and isolated falls on the Far North QLD coast and the western Gulf would have disturbed the BBQs. Moist onshore winds along with instability under an upper trough gave isolated heavy rain around Innisfail where the airport had 28mm in the gauge between 09.00 and 17.00EST.

The very slow-moving low sitting in the monsoon trough over northern WA continues to give heavy rain, with many locations in the Kimberley reporting between 25 to 100mm between 09.00 and 15.00WST. This low is expected to move offshore during Friday or Saturday with high probability that it will develop into a cyclone as it moves west down the coast. It is then expected to move to the west, away from the coast.
