Australian weather briefs

  • The NSW RFS has revised upwards the number of homes destroyed in Sunday's catastrophic conditions to 41. Most were in the Sir Ivan fire east of Dunedoo, which has burnt through 520 square km. The total doesn't include over 100 outbuildings and a church. Fifty fires are still burning across the state, sixteen still not contained as of Wednesday afternoon, so firefighters are apprehensively watching deteriorating weather forecast from Thursday although it is not expected to reach last weekend's intensity. Moderate to heavy rain is forecast for the state's northeast later in the weekend which should help control some of the fires.
  • Some of the unseasonal rain that fell in central southern WA last weekend is making its way down the river systems that empty onto the South West Coast raising flood warnings. Minor flooding is taking place on the Blackwood River around Bridgetown and the Swan River above Perth, moderate or minor flooding either side of Northam on the Avon River, and close to minor flooding on the Murray River around Pinjarra and Ravenswood. Dumbleyung Lake, east of Wagin, has filled for what is believed to be the first time in summer since January 1982. The lake is the largest deep-water lake of south western WA, covering 52 square km. ABC News gives more detail on the effects of the flooding.
  • How do you keep herds of cattle and large numbers of chooks and turkeys cool in a heatwave? AWN reported on 23 January about innovative ways of protecting pineapples from sunburn. ABC Rural has gone a step further and reported on the many ways in which primary producers are keeping their valuable assets comfortable. For livestock, shadecloth and a sprinkler system do the trick. Kylie Squires of Buckhobble dairy farm in the NSW Central West said her cows "absolutely love it, they'll stand under it and be dripping wet." But turkeys aren't the most sensible of birds and need a little coaxing.

Antarctic weather brief

  • A sixty square kilometre chunk of the Pine Island Glacier has calved from West Antarctica into the Southern Ocean in January, reports Climate Central. The glacier is SW of the southernmost tip of South America, and this calving follows an earlier one nearly ten times larger from the same glacier in July 2015. They raise questions about the continuing stability of the ice shelf flowing from the glacier as the ocean under it has warmed by about 0.6°C over the past 20 years. See the article for details and fascinating before-and-after satellite images.
