The graphics and statistical information on this page fill gradually as they become available, with some not available until the next day. The page is updated every 30 minutes at about 20 and 50 minutes past the hour.

For weather news as it breaks that is tagged and organised, use the links on the Weather and Climate Media Reports page.

Sunday 17 December 2017

News section resumes: This section of the site is back from today following a long break. My time has been well spent, carrying out major renovations on our house as well as various back-end jobs on the site to keep it running smoothly. Those of you who have done home renovations will be aware how time-consuming and tiring they can be!

I will be making some changes to this section by the end of the year so that the items slot better into the Daily Weather Summary where they are ultimately archived. The aim is for each day's DWS to be a concise summary of that day's weather, primarily in Australia, but with references to important international weather events, climate and climate change news, and breaking research in meteorology and its related sciences.

Australian weather briefs

  • Heatwave conditions ramped up again today in the eastern states, promising even higher temperatures than the heat of the past four days with extreme conditions forecast in SW QLD and NW NSW. The area covered by heatwave of different intensity is shown in the BoM map in this ABC story on the heatwave. The greatest heat today has been in NW NSW, where Bourke scored top with 44.6°, SW QLD (Birdsville 44.9), southern NT (Jervois 43.3) and northern and central areas of SA (Tarcoola 46.2). The BoM Heatwave Service maps, updated daily around noon EDT, are here and there's detailed information on the service here.
  • The hot day in NSW produced widespread thunderstorms, some severe, across central and northeastern parts. Large storm areas in the southern Central Tablelands dropped 20c-sized hail in Lithgow and gave nearby Marrangaroo 26.8mm to 23.00EDT. Another storm complex in the Upper Hunter gave Hunter Springs 42mm in two hours to 17.00EDT, while a ferocious storm that played around W of Glen Innes gave Swan Vale 51mm in three hours to 15.00.
  • A Tasmanian study has found that burn-offs have little impact on reducing the intensity and extent of bushfires in the state [Guardian]. The study, published in the CSIRO's International Journal of Wildland Fire, used computer modelling to simulate 11,000 bushfires across TAS on a typical dangerous fire weather day. It found, among other things, that 31% of the state would require prescribed burning to have a significant impact on reducing bushfire threat.
