WA: Continuing cold in central and southern areas

A cold southern airmass combined with continuing heavy cloud cover kept both night and daytime temperatures well below average across large parts of the state (see the maps below). Central WA had the largest departures below normal minima, with Meekatharra's low of 14.0 some 10.2 below the January average. Carnegie, 450km ENE of Meekatharra, broke the January minimum temperature record it set yesterday with a new low of 14.9. Ravensthorpe and Leonora came within a degree of their January record low minima.

Daytime temperatures were again extraordinarily low in the southeastern quarter of the state. Southern Cross struggled to reach 17.8, 16.8 below normal, Kalgoorlie-Boulder recorded 18.4 (-15.2), Paynes Find 22.1 (-14.9), Yeelirrie 18.4 (-16.7) and Balgair 18.0 (-14.9).

TAS: Strong winds as fronts sweep through

A strong westerly stream covered TAS with fronts crossing the state overnight and again this evening. Wind gusted to 135km/h atop Mt Wellington, 122 on Maatsuyker Island, 107 at Scotts Peak Dam in the South West and 94km/h in Hobart City.
