NSW, QLD: Very cold on the Northern Tablelands and Darling Downs

Double-digit negative temperatures were recorded on the NSW Northern Tablelands this morning. The reading of -10.6 at Tenterfield's Federation Park was the lowest recorded for any month during the site's 41 years of operation, and 11.7 below average. But two official stations with only short histories recorded even colder temperatures: Glen Innes Airport reported -12.3 (the Post Office site was a balmy -6.1 and the Ag Station -7.0), while the Tree Group Nursery site in Armidale, which is the previous University site renamed, reported -10.8 in the screen (air temperature) and -15.3 on the grass. The nursery recorded -10.1 yesterday and -9.0 on Friday morning. Armidale Airport site, which is on the southern rim of the valley in which the city lies, has recorded -3.4, -2.6 and -1.2 over the past three mornings, starkly demonstrating the variations possible in minimum temperatures over short distances due to topography and cold air drainage.

In QLD, sub-zero temperatures were recorded across the Darling Downs and Maranoa, with the lowest on the Granite Belt where Stanthorpe recorded -9.0 in the screen and -13.0 on the grass. The very low minima are the result of clear skies under a high pressure system combined with very dry air: dew points across the border areas yesterday afternoon were between -10 and -20, giving relative humidity readings as low as 9% at Oakey and Applethorpe and 12% at Armidale Airport during the early afternoon.

Strong temperature differences bring strong winds. This chart for 10pm EST at the 850hPa pressure level (about 1.3km above the surface) shows air temperatures around 10 to 14C over SE AUS, while in the unusually laid-back thermal trough to the south of the Bight they are as low as -10C. COLA

NSW, VIC: Windy in the high country. A strong temperature gradient provided the impetus for gale force winds across exposed parts of NSW and VIC today as an approaching trough tightened pressure gradients. Lookout Hill in western VIC reported a top gust of 124km/h this evening, while Thredbo Top Station topped the windiness scale for the 48 hours to 9am Tuesday with an average speed of 66.0km/h. See also wind data and high AWS wind reports below.
