significant newsworthy major

When reading these descriptions of today's weather events, please refer to the charts and tables for support and details. The descriptions serve to point out significant events and add information that is not available elsewhere on the page.

NSW: Local heavy rain at Seal Rocks

In a good example of how you have to study geography to understand meteorology, Seal Rocks recorded 59.2mm in the 24 hours to 9am; nearby, Nelson Bay recorded 13.2 and Tiona 12, but most of the rest of NSW was dry. From Newcastle 90km to Seal Rocks, the NSW coast trends ENE, making it the only significant part of the Australian east coast to do so. While rain from the Tasman low cleared the continent early on Saturday morning, a constant procession of showers has marched up the NSW coast since then, staying offshore in a strong SW wind. However, from mid-afternoon yesterday to mid-afternoon today, shower after shower has clipped the coast around Seal Rocks, resulting in its isolated heavy fall. This afternoon, the stream turned southerly, bringing those showers into the lower Hunter.

QLD: Bushfires in the SE

A bushfire that began yesterday morning near Cooyar, 65km NNW of Toowoomba, threatened homes before being brought under control today. Firefighters also attended several fires near Burpengary, 40km N of Brisbane yesterday. Periodic gusty winds and afternoon humidity as low as 20% is producing the early start to the fire season.
