Noteworthy weather today
significant newsworthy major

QLD, NSW: Rare Outback fog. Fog is a fairly rare visitor to flat, dry outback areas of QLD and NSW. They are not high enough to experience fog from low cloud, and seldom get overnight radiation fog, which requires humidity of 100% and is most frequent when a cold, clear night with light breezes occurs after rain. These conditions were met this morning, with Quilpie, Thargomindah and Tibooburra all reported dense fog at their 6 and 9am observations. Average occurrence of fog at the three locations is 0.8, 0.8 and 1.3 days a year.

NSW, SE QLD: Further heavy coastal showers. Showers, some heavy, continued the full length of the NSW coast and in SE QLD throughout the day. Details are in wettest and downpours for today, and much of the rain that fell today is reflected in the 24-hour totals to 9am Friday. The heaviest totals continue to be right on the coast, with the eastern side of the Great Divide receiving nothing above 10mm.

QLD, NSW, VIC: Light inland rain welcome. Light rain continued to fall intermittently across much of western VIC, NSW and southern inland QLD today, thanks to the broad uplift provided by an approaching weak trough acting on moisture that has been channelled into the area from the Coral Sea since last Monday. While totals to 9am were below 10mm in inland QLD and NSW, parts of western VIC received between 10 and 20mm, their best falls in six weeks. Mt William in the Grampians recorded 32.6.
