NSW: Rain, gales and snow as southerly intensifies

A surface low remained stationary off the far NSW South Coast today while a strong high pressure system moved east into the Bight, intensifying the southerly stream over SE NSW. Meanwhile, an upper low over Sydney this morning moved away to the east during the afternoon. Heavy rain continued on the South Coast overnight and this morning, pushing inland to give useful falls to the ACT and South West Slopes. This rain area began moving north up the coast after midday as the upper circulation moved eastwards, with heavy falls from Wollongong to Sydney from mid afternoon to late evening and around Newcastle during the evening and into early Saturday morning. Jervis Bay topped this mornings 9am rainlist with 107.4mm, while Bombala and Green Cape both posted the highest June one-day totals in 13 years of record. The heaviest rain to 9am Saturday, most of which fell today, was recorded in the Illawarra. Gales were reported on the South Coast, the wind gusting to 100km/h at Montague Island.

A somewhat unexpected blast of colder air also moved northwards during the day, giving 25cm of snow on the Snowy Mountains overnight and a further 10cm during the day, but also giving a snow cover on the Central Tablelands during the afternoon. Snow began in the high country north of Taralga early afternoon and by nightfall snow was falling in an area from Oberon to Yetholme to Bell and Blackheath. The Jenolan Caves and Hampton to Oberon Roads were closed along with many minor roads around Oberon. Ice warnings were posted for the Great Western Highway between Blackheath and Yetholme and Bells Line of Road between Bell and Lithgow. Snow depths were commonly 5 to 10cm, and snow ceased soon after dark.
