NSW: Torrential showers in eastern Sydney

The thunderstorms that accompanied heavy showers on the Illawarra and Sydney coasts late yesterday died out around midnight, but heavy showers continued to move into Sydney's eastern suburbs and CBD until around 4 this morning. Cronulla South reported heavy showers almost every hour between 7 last night and 9 this morning, giving 44.0mm in the gauge. Torrential showers fell in an area from around the CBD to Bondi during the early hours of the morning. Observatory Hill recorded 23.4mm in 90 minutes to 3.30am, while Bondi recorded 35mm between 2 and 4am, 15mm falling in 15 minutes to 2.18am. The heaviest 24 hour report was from Royal Sydney Golf Club at Rose Bay with 85.2mm, much of which is likely to have fallen in this early morning downpour. It is Rose Bay's second highest one-day July total (150.1mm on 7 July 1931 is the highest), though the station has a broken record with figures for 41 Julys since 1928.
