Noteworthy weather today
significant newsworthy major

ACT, NSW: Storms bring some heavy rain. Part of the roof of the National Museum, Canberra, collapsed during a thunderstorm this afternoon. Storms developed on the Central and Southern Tablelands soon after noon, then moved northeastwards during the evening affecting an area from the Mid North Coast to the South Coast. Heavy rain and strong winds in Canberra just after 4pm caused minor flooding and tree damage, with 28 emergency services callouts reported, mostly in southern Canberra and Tuggeranong. A build-up of hailstones is thought to have blocked roof drains at the National Museum, causing the ceiling space to fill with water and collapse, damaging administrative areas and some paintings. Damage was estimated at $500,000. Hail to golfball size was reported at Cook. There were also some heavy late-afternoon falls in Sydney (see downpours). With storms slow-moving, there were isolated reports of flash flooding, mostly in western Sydney.

WA: Storm sparks South Coast fire. Lightning is believed to have started a bushfire near Alexander Bay, 80km E of Esperance, around dawn this morning. By this evening, the fire had burnt through 7 square kilometres and forced the evacuation of about 60 campers.

NT, QLD: Cool conditions continue. Unseasonably low temperatures continued across much of the north of the continent today. Brisbane Airport's minimum of 14.4 set a new December record (see records). Rolleston QLD's low of 8.9 was 11 below normal (see coldest)
