VIC: Drought bites hard in NW and Central VIC

Farmers across Victoria's Mallee, Wimmera and Central regions say their winter crops will fail if rain is not received in the next two weeks. Conditions have been so dry and unseasonably warm since mid-July that canola crops are flowering 2 to 3 weeks ahead of normal, and yeild from canola, oats, wheat, barley and lucerne crops could be cut in half. In the Mallee and Wimmera, frosts and strong, drying winds have exacerbated the dry conditions, and crops are either dying or will be unprofitable to harvest. In the Bendigo area, water storages are at an all-time low, with stage 4 restrictions, which prevent all outside watering, due to come into effect in Bendigo, Castlemaine, Kyneton and Heathcote on 1 September. Coliban Water, which supplies the area, told the Bendigo Advertiser that storages were down to 13.5%, down 8.5% on the same time last year, and that 80mm of rain over the catchments in the past five weeks had resulted in inflows of only 100 megalitres. Between 10,000 and 15,000 ml were needed to maintain the present water restriction levels.

WA: Heavy showers in the South West. Heavy showers were reported with the passage of a front through the South West this evening. Details are in Downpours.
