NSW: Winter hailstorm whitens central Sydney

An infrequent winter hailstorm left parts of central Sydney under a blanket of small hail up to 10cm deep late this afternoon. The thunderstorm was one of several that developed along the ranges between Goulburn and the Upper Hunter Valley around midday before moving east. It hit inner western suburbs just after 4pm, giving hail for up to 20 minutes. The pea-sized hail accumulated to 10cm depth in Forest Lodge, and nearby Anzac Bridge over Blackwattle Bay was described as "covered in snow", with driving conditions hazardous. "Ankle-deep" hail was reported in Surrey Hills. A second cell gave heavy falls of pea-sized hail around Camden and Campbelltown in Sydney's southwest about 3pm. Lightning struck a 22-foot sloop moored in Rushcutters Bay causing damage to its mast and wiring.
