NSW, VIC, TAS: Low brings cold, storms to SE

An upper cold pool over the SE of the continent stimulated the development of a trough and low pressure system off the NSW coast today, bringing a dramatic change to the weather in SE NSW and eastern VIC. Cooler air had already moved into the SE following last Saturday's change, and clear skies overnight led to some very low minimum temperatures this morning. Frost-level minima were general across southern and SE NSW and E VIC away from the coast with readings up to 9 below average at Wagga, Cowra and Young. The low of -5-5 at Young Airport equalled the previous May record there.

During the day, a cold, unstable airmass pushed into East Gippsland and up the NSW coast and ranges, bringing cloud and unseasonably low daytime temperatures. Mt Nowa Nowa in East Gippsland and King Island off NW TAS both recorded their coldest May day in 11 years. Widespread thunderstorms developed off the NSW coast from Wollongong to Grafton mid-afternoon as the cold upper air pushed north into the trough. Scattered storms brought heavy falls of small hail to the Blue Mountains, northern Sydney suburbs and the Mid North Coast.

  • One cell that moved north through Katoomba and Blackheath between 5 and 6pm carpetted towns from Leura to Blackheath with 2 to 4cm of small, soft hail which many mistook for snow. Drifts of hail were still lying in southern Blackheath on Wednesday morning. Traffic advisories were issued for the Great Western Highway and ice was also reported on Bells Line of Road. Katoomba SES were called out to 12 incidents, mostly roof flooding in homes where hail had blocked guttering. In Megalong Valley, to the SW of Blackheath, golfball-sized hail fell, and the only access road that winds down a canyon from Blackheath had to be graded free of small hail. The resulting kilometre-long piles of hail on either side of the road were up to a metre high and took 5 days to thaw.
  • Drifts of pea-sized hail were also reported around Narrabeen and Collaroy, including on beaches.
  • Up to 10cm of hail north of Taree caused icy conditions on the Pacific Highway which was closed for 5 hours after a truck rolled over.

QLD: Isolated heavy rain at Winton

The upper trough over NSW extended NW into western QLD giving isolated heavy showers. One descended on Winton soon after dawn, dropping 36.8mm in the airport raingauge between 7 and 8am and giving a 3-hour total of 47mm to 9am, making Winton the wettest place in the country today.
