NT: Strongest Territory cyclone on record crosses Arnhem coast

Category 5 Severe Tropical Cyclone Monica crossed the coast at Junction Bay, 37km WNW of Maningrida, at 8 this evening. With a central pressure estimated at 905hPa and winds assessed at 350km/h, the cyclone was said by the Bureau of Meteorology to be the strongest to affect the Territory in recorded history, eclipsing Tracy in 1974, Neville in 1992 and Ingrid last year. While it was fortunate that no large population centres were hit, major destruction was reported in Maningrida, while many other centres in the cyclone's path along the Arnhem coast reported damage. Tree devastation was widespread. No meteorological instruments recorded the full fury of Monica, but the highest wind gusts were 100km/h at Milingimbi at 12.30pm, 148km/h at Maningrida at 6.31pm, and 96km/h at Warruwi at 10pm. Yesterday, Gove Airport recorded a gust of 81km/h, its strongest April wind in 21 years.

While rainfall was intense in the infeed bands around the cyclone (see downpours), the heaviest rain over land was recorded after the cyclone rapidly weakened in the area SE of Darwin on Tuesday. Ngayawili, 130km W of Nhulunbuy (Gove), recorded 198mm between 6am and 6pm today, much of it in a strong infeed band from the north after the cyclone had passed to the west. Rain on Tuesday set many one-day records for the 24 hours to 9am Wednesday (see Wednesday's records) with the top reported fall 304mm at Majestic Orchards, 45km SSE of Darwin.

A Bureau of Meteorology report on the cyclone is in preparation here.
