TAS, VIC: Lows bring brief heavy rain and wind

A sharp upper trough bearing an upper low system crossed TAS today. At the surface, a pair of lows straddled Bass Strait during the early hours of this morning in response to the upper system, then slowly resolved into a single low east of Hobart by late this evening. Rain with some heavy falls and thunderstorms developed across NW TAS and especially King Island during the morning, then moved SE to give most of TAS 5 to 15mm of rain during the day. Cape Grim, the most northwesterly point of TAS gauged 25.0mm of rain for the 24 hours to 9 this morning, the highest March one-day total in the station's 19-year history. City of Melbourne Bay, on the eastern side of King Island, scored 58.8mm for the 2 days to 9am Friday. Southerly winds circulating around the western side of the lows gave a welcome second day of showers to eastern and NE VIC and parts of SE NSW with falls of 5 to 15mm in many areas (see the rainfall map for Friday). Strong, cool winds circulating around the low gave gusts to 102km/h at Thredbo Top Station and 95km/h at Mt Hotham summit during the morning.

WA, NT, QLD: Monsoon rains ease briefly

Rain was again widespread along the monsoon trough visible on the surface charts below, crossing the continent between the WA Kimberley and Cape York Peninsula. The heaviest falls to 9am were along the southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast, where winds from the monsoonal low over Arnhem Land brought heavy cloud associated with the low onshore. In WA, a cloudmass over the Pilbara produced heavier falls there, including 137.4mm at Marillana, 270km SSE of Port Hedland. Elsewhere in the northern tropics, falls were generally lighter than in recent days.
