WA: Thunderstorms bring damaging hail and wind

Storms today gave some unofficial rainfall readings of 60 to 90mm on farms scattered across the Gascoyne, Murchison and parts of the mid-west and northern wheatbelt. Strong winds and hail have damaged crops and fences. A storm late afternoon at Mt Magnet dropped golf-ball sized hail on the town and nearby mine site, leaving a ground-cover 5 to 7cm deep. Meekatharra Airport, 175km NNE, reported a wind gust of 115km/h just before 7pm, its strongest for October in 50 years. Berkshire Valley, 15km ENE of Moora, recorded 45.0mm in the 24 hours to 9am, its highest October one-day total in 100 years. 20km farther east, Bindi Bindi East reported 70.6mm, also an October record. Yeelirrie in the Goldfields reported 34.3mm, its highest for October in 79 years.
