Noteworthy weather today
significant newsworthy major

Seasonal heavy rain continued across northern QLD today and down the coast as far as Mackay. Heavy falls were also reported from the NE NT. Details are in wettest and downpours.

QLD: Heavy rain in Proserpine

While tropical downpours are a normal feature of the monsoon weather being experienced from the NT NT to the central QLD Coast, the automatic raingauge at Proserpine Airport received a greater than normal workout overnight. The total rain for the 24 hours to 9am was 155.4mm, but 148.0mm of this fell in the 7 hour period from 7 last night to 2 this morning in a moist southeasterly strengthened by the approach to the coast of Tropical Cyclone Kerry.

QLD: Cyclone Kerry moves towards coast

Category 3 Tropical Cyclone Kerry was located about 1,200km ENE of Mackay late this morning, moving slowly but eratically westwards. Its main affect has been to strengthen winds along the QLD coast, assisted by a strong ridge from a 1028hPa high under Tasmania. Significantly, the highest 24-hour wind runs to 9am were from QLD: 857km (= 24 hour average of 35.7km/h) at Mackay, 838 (34.9) at Toowoomba and 824 (34.3) at Hamilton Island. The increasing wind is producing rising seas along the coast, with holiday crowds finding turbulent surf and a greater danger of rips. Dicky Beach and Currimundi Beach at Caloundra, Sunrise Beach near Noosa and most Sunshine Coast beaches were closed for all or part of the day.

NSW: Still 60% in drought

The latest figures issued by the NSW Department of Primary Industry show that 60% of the state is still in drought. This is 8% lower than a month ago thanks to improving conditions on the northern tablelands and slopes.
